Shipping Coordinating Committee, Maritime Safety Committee; Notice of Meeting

The Shipping Coordinating Committee will conduct an open meeting at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 13, 1999, in Room 2415, at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, 2100 2nd Street, SW, Washington, DC. The purpose of this meeting will be to finalize preparations for the 71st Session of the Maritime Safety Committee, and associated bodies of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is scheduled for May 19-28, 1999, at IMO Headquarters in London. At this meeting, papers received and the draft U.S. positions will be discussed.

Among other things, the items of particular interest are:

  1. Adoption of amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention;

  2. Bulk carrier safety;

  3. Role of the human element;

  4. Formal safety assessment;

  5. Unsafe practices associated with the trafficking or transport of migrants by sea; and

  6. Reports of seven subcommittees--Fire protection; Training and watchkeeping; Stability, load lines and fishing vessel safety; Dangerous goods, solid cargoes and containers; Ship design and equipment; Flag State implementation; and Bulk liquids and gases.
